Exhibition from “Next Art Tainan”- Taste of Blessing
Curator: Lin Ping
Artist: Cheng Jen-pei
Artist Cheng Jen-pei takes us to experience the Hakka cuisines and the beautiful wedding ornaments in Taiwan Beipu Hakka village back in 2019. The artist learned from the female elders about the memory of their wedding banquets. These unforgettable images and emotions in their important day were pictured by the banquet food and the personal dowry. The artist photographed the food sculptures to simulate the event and perform someone’s life story.
As a Hakka daughter-in-law, Cheng Jen-pei experienced the old traditions. The wedding banquet is not only about food, but also representing the state of mind of the bride, family expectations, lucky symbols and blessings. The happiness is chained with the traditions and culture. The banquet is beyond the food and it is from the desires of the bride’s dream, somebody’s expectation or the crowds’ set-up.
Taking this exhibition to The Place Tainan in 2022, Cheng Jen-pei especially re-manipulated the 2019 set of images for the media food and ceremony. Beside the imagination from the layout of food and ornaments, she uses the poems to bring the voice into the display, like the commercial advertisements on such colourfull backgrounds. She intents to stimulate the audience’s sensation of the taste, texture, visual impact and blessings by not only the images, but the wordings for the viewers to feel the bride’s whispers while going through the pictures. Be ready to have a contemporary wedding bouquet invited by Cheng Jen-pei!
